Incubator-Associated Mold Contamination

Symptom
Recurring fungal contamination in cultures after incubation. Multiple cultures affected over time. Visible mold growth may appear on incubator surfaces. Persistent contamination despite replacing affected cultures.
Common Causes
  1. 1 Growth of molds and bacteria on incubator walls and shelves in humid atmosphere
  2. 2 Spores carried on forced-air circulation throughout incubator
  3. 3 Inadequate or infrequent cleaning of CO2 humidified incubators
  4. 4 Spillages in incubator not cleaned promptly
  5. 5 Water pan in humidified incubators becoming contaminated
  6. 6 Poor maintenance schedule for incubator cleaning
Solutions
  1. 1 Clean and disinfect incubators regularly according to manufacturer specifications
  2. 2 Enclose open dishes in plastic boxes with close-fitting (but not sealed) lids
  3. 3 Clean water pans in humidified incubators frequently
  4. 4 Wipe down all incubator surfaces with appropriate disinfectant
  5. 5 Remove spillages immediately and disinfect affected area thoroughly
  6. 6 Use secondary containment for all plates and open vessels
  7. 7 Consider using copper-lined incubators which inhibit microbial growth
  8. 8 Establish and maintain regular incubator maintenance schedule
