A Novel Technique for Raman Analysis of Highly Radioactive Samples Using Any Standard Micro-Raman Spectrometer

DOI: 10.3791/54889-v
What you'll learn
  • Prepare radioactive samples for Raman analysis without instrument contamination
  • Install and align highly radioactive samples under micro-Raman spectrometer
  • Analyze actinides and irradiated fuel using standard Raman instrumentation
Protocol

We present a technique for Raman spectroscopic analysis of highly radioactive samples compatible with any standard micro-Raman spectrometer, without any radioactive contamination of the instrument. We also show some applications using actinide compounds and irradiated fuel materials.

Difficulty
advanced
Total time
~1–2 hours per sample (including safety protocols and alignment)

Steps

1
Prepare sample holder for radioactive material

Assemble and configure the sample holder apparatus designed to contain highly radioactive samples and prevent contamination of the Raman spectrometer during analysis.

▶ 01:00
2
Install radioactive sample into holder capsule

Carefully place the radioactive sample (actinide compound or irradiated fuel) into the prepared sample holder capsule following safety containment protocols.

▶ 03:28
3
Position capsule under Raman microscope

Mount and align the sealed capsule containing the radioactive sample beneath the micro-Raman spectrometer objective for spectroscopic measurement.

▶ 04:16
4
Acquire and interpret Raman spectral data

Collect Raman spectra from the radioactive sample using standard spectrometer capabilities and analyze representative results demonstrating technique efficacy.
