Breathing-controlled Electrical Stimulation (BreEStim) for Management of Neuropathic Pain and Spasticity

DOI: 10.3791/50077-v
What you'll learn
  • Understand breathing-controlled electrical stimulation (BreEStim) mechanism for pain management
  • Set up and configure electrical stimulation parameters for neuropathic pain treatment
  • Monitor and synchronize stimulation with patient breathing patterns
  • Evaluate clinical outcomes in spasticity and neuropathic pain cases
Protocol

The purpose is to present a new method, breathing-control electrical stimulation (BreEStim) for management of neuropathic pain and spasticity.

Difficulty
advanced
Total time
~45–60 min per patient session (initial setup and monitoring)

Steps

1
Prepare patient and establish baseline measurements

Position subject and document baseline pain/spasticity scores and vital signs. Set up monitoring equipment to establish patient's normal breathing pattern.

▶ 01:21
2
Configure electrical stimulation device parameters

Set electrode placement, stimulation frequency, intensity, and pulse width according to clinical protocol. Adjust parameters to patient tolerance and target symptom severity.

▶ 03:52
3
Synchronize stimulation with breathing cycle

Enable breathing-control mode to trigger electrical pulses during specific phases of respiration. Verify real-time synchronization between respiratory monitoring and stimulation delivery.

▶ 05:19
4
Record physiological responses and stimulation data

Monitor and log breathing patterns, stimulation parameters, and patient-reported pain/spasticity during the session. Document all parameters for later analysis.

▶ 06:56
5
Assess clinical outcomes post-treatment

Measure changes in pain scores, spasticity level, and functional outcomes. Present case findings demonstrating efficacy of BreEStim intervention.
