DOI: 10.3791/3818-v
What you'll learn
  • Understand pre-procedure imaging assessment of left atrial appendage morphology
  • Execute catheter ablation technique for atrial fibrillation treatment
  • Perform WATCHMAN device implantation and positioning verification
  • Recognize stroke prevention outcomes in non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients
Protocol

Catheter ablation is combined with placement of the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device to prevent ischemic stroke in a patient with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Difficulty
advanced
Total time
~3-4 hours per patient procedure

Steps

1
Image left atrial appendage anatomy pre-procedure

Perform imaging studies to assess left atrial appendage shape, size, and anatomy prior to intervention. This determines device selection and optimal implantation strategy.

▶ 02:45
2
Prepare patient for catheter-based intervention

Establish vascular access, administer anticoagulation, and position patient for combined ablation and device closure procedure.

▶ 05:11
3
Perform catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation

Execute radiofrequency ablation targeting ectopic foci and reentrant circuits within the atrium to restore normal sinus rhythm.

▶ 06:28
4
Implant and position WATCHMAN closure device

Deploy the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device via catheter, verify proper positioning, and confirm device stability before final implantation.

▶ 13:29
5
Evaluate outcomes from preliminary clinical studies

Review efficacy and safety data demonstrating stroke prevention and procedural success rates in combined ablation-closure patient populations.
