Protocol
Described below is a method for implantation of multiple polymer electrode arrays across anatomically distant brain regions for chronic electrophysiological recording in freely moving rats. Preparation and surgical implantation are described in detail, with emphasis on design principles to guide adaptation of these methods for use in other species.

Steps
1
Prepare polymer electrode arrays for implantation
Assemble and verify the flexible polymer electrode arrays prior to surgery. Ensure proper electrode contact and array integrity.

Align and prepare micromanipulator positioning
Set up and calibrate micromanipulators for stereotaxic guidance. Position apparatus to target anatomically distant brain regions.

Insert arrays serially into target brain sites
Sequentially lower and position polymer electrode arrays into planned anatomical locations using micromanipulator control.

Retract shuttle and construct chronic implant
Remove insertion guides, secure electrode arrays in place, and assemble the final implant headstage for chronic recording.
