Control of Eating Behavior Using a Novel Feedback System
DOI: 10.3791/57432-v
What you'll learn
✓Set up a real-time visual feedback system for monitoring eating behavior
✓Implement plate-scale integration with computer software for meal tracking
✓Interpret visual feedback curves to identify and modify eating rate patterns
✓Apply behavioral intervention techniques to normalize food intake and body weight
Protocol
Subjects eat food from a plate placed on a scale connected to a computer that records the weight loss of the plate during the meal. Feedback on the computer screen allows the subject to adapt her/his eating behavior to reference curves thus normalizing body weight.
Difficulty
intermediate
Total time
~20–30 minutes per meal session; protocol duration varies by subject compliance period (weeks to months)
Steps
1
Prepare and configure smartphone application
Install and set up the feedback application on a smartphone or computer interface. Configure the application to connect with the plate scale and establish baseline parameters for the subject.

2
Control eating rate using visual feedback display
Place food on a scale-equipped plate and display real-time weight loss curves on screen. Guide subject to adjust eating pace by monitoring visual feedback against reference curves during the meal.

3
Analyze effectiveness of visual feedback intervention
Evaluate changes in eating rate and food intake quantity following feedback system use. Compare eating behavior metrics against baseline to assess normalization of consumption patterns.

4
Summarize behavioral modification outcomes
Document results showing how real-time visual feedback successfully modifies eating behavior and supports body weight normalization. Discuss practical implementation and potential for clinical or research applications.
