Determining Tribocorrosion Rate and Wear-Corrosion Synergy of Bulk and Thin Film Aluminum Alloys

DOI: 10.3791/58235-v
What you'll learn
  • Prepare bulk and thin film aluminum alloy samples for tribocorrosion testing
  • Execute tribocorrosion testing protocol in simulated seawater environment
  • Quantify wear-corrosion synergy and determine corrosion rates at applied potentials
Protocol

Here, we present a protocol to measure the tribocorrosion rate and wear-corrosion synergy of thin film and bulk Al alloys in simulated sea water at room temperature.

Difficulty
advanced
Total time
~4–8 hours per sample set (including electrode preparation, testing, and data acquisition)

Steps

1
Prepare bulk and thin film aluminum alloy electrodes

Machine bulk metallic samples to specification and prepare working electrodes from both bulk Al alloys and thin film deposits. Mount and isolate samples to expose only the desired surface area for testing.

2
Execute tribocorrosion test on aluminum thin film

Immerse the prepared thin film electrode in simulated seawater and apply controlled mechanical wear while maintaining specified electrochemical potential. Record electrochemical response and material loss data throughout the testing period.

▶ 03:07
3
Analyze tribocorrosion rates at multiple applied potentials

Calculate wear-corrosion synergy and quantify tribocorrosion rates from the experimental data obtained across different applied electrochemical potentials. Compare results between bulk and thin film aluminum alloy samples.
