DOI: 10.3791/54770-v
What you'll learn
✓Prepare wheat gluten/Crambe abyssinica blends for film extrusion processing
✓Execute film extrusion and post-extrusion compression molding techniques
✓Evaluate mechanical properties of extruded blends by Crambe content ratio
Protocol
The side stream from plant oil production of Crambe abyssinica has limited value. The purpose of this study was to find methods for extruding materials based on this side stream, demonstrating that products with a higher value can be produced. The extrudates were found to have promising properties.
Mix wheat gluten with Crambe abyssinica side-stream material at specified ratios and hydration levels to form homogeneous dough. Condition dough to target moisture and consistency for extrusion.

2
Extrude film from dough mixture
Feed prepared dough through film extrusion equipment at controlled temperature and screw speed to produce continuous film. Monitor extrusion parameters to ensure uniform thickness and structure.

3
Compress molded film post-extrusion
Cut extruded film into specimens and apply compression molding to achieve final geometry and density. Control temperature and pressure during molding step.

4
Measure mechanical properties by Crambe content
Condition molded samples and perform tensile, flexural, or impact testing across blends with varying Crambe abyssinica ratios. Record and compare mechanical performance data.
