DOI: 10.3791/54908-v
What you'll learn
✓Construct a low-cost high-density EEG headpiece for rodents
✓Perform surgical implantation of chronic transcranial EEG electrodes
✓Record, extract, and process multi-channel EEG signals from mice
Protocol
Instructions for the low-cost construction and surgical implantation of a chronic transcranial high-density electroencephalographic montage into mice are provided. Signal recording, extraction, and processing techniques are also described.
Difficulty

Steps
1
Design and construct headpiece assembly
Build a custom high-density EEG headpiece using open-source resources and low-cost materials. This section covers the mechanical design and fabrication of the electrode mounting structure.

2
Construct adapter and map recording channels
Assemble the connector adapter and establish channel mapping for multi-electrode recording. This ensures proper signal routing from implanted electrodes to recording equipment.
▶ 04:22
3
Perform surgical implantation of headpiece
Execute the surgical procedure for chronic transcranial implantation of the EEG headpiece into the mouse skull. This is a sterile procedure requiring anesthesia and IACUC approval.
▶ 06:39
4
Setup signal extraction and begin recording
Configure the recording system and begin acquiring EEG signals from the implanted electrodes. Connect the headpiece to amplification and digitization hardware.
▶ 08:59
5
Process and analyze recorded EEG data
Apply signal processing techniques and demonstrate applications of the acquired high-density EEG recordings. Results showcase the utility of this low-cost approach.
