Holistic Facial Composite Creation and Subsequent Video Line-up Eyewitness Identification Paradigm

DOI: 10.3791/53298-v
What you'll learn
  • Conduct a holistic facial composite creation from eyewitness memory
  • Administer a video line-up identification task with culprit-present/absent conditions
  • Analyze eyewitness identification accuracy and false positive rates
  • Interpret results from applied forensic psychology paradigms
Protocol

This applied experimental paradigm replicates circumstances by which an eyewitness to a real crime may create a holistic facial composite of the culprit from memory, and then attempt to identify the culprit from a video line-up containing the culprit or one in which he or she is not present.

Difficulty
intermediate
Total time
~1–2 hours per participant (crime video viewing, composite creation, line-up task, questionnaire)

Steps

1
View crime scene video and create facial composite

Participant watches a video depicting a culprit committing a crime, then works with an operator to generate a holistic facial composite of the suspect from memory using specialized software or manual tools.

2
Administer video line-up and completion questionnaire

Participant views a video line-up containing either the culprit or foils, and indicates identification decisions. Participant then completes a questionnaire assessing confidence, decision process, and line-up quality perceptions.

3
Analyze culprit-present and culprit-absent outcomes

Evaluate eyewitness identification accuracy, false positive rates, and hit rates across culprit-present and culprit-absent line-up conditions to assess eyewitness reliability.
