Protocol
Biopharma Insights The achromatic doublet on glass (ADG) Fresnel lens makes use of two materials with differing dispersion to reduce chromatic aberration and increase attainable concentration. In this paper, a protocol for the complete characterization of the ADG Fresnel lens is presented.
Difficulty
advanced
Total time
~4–6 hours per lens characterization (including solar simulator setup, calibration, and multi-method measurements)
Steps
1
Prepare solar simulator for photovoltaic cell calibration
Configure and stabilize the solar simulator light source to standard AM 1.5G spectrum conditions. Calibrate the beam intensity and homogeneity to ensure accurate baseline measurements for subsequent lens testing.
▶ 01:24
2
Measure bare solar cell reference performance
Assess uncovered multijunction solar cell output under the calibrated solar simulator to establish baseline efficiency and current-voltage characteristics without lens concentration.
▶ 02:18
3
Test ADG Fresnel lens with multijunction solar cell
Position the ADG Fresnel lens above the multijunction solar cell and measure electrical output to quantify concentration efficiency gain and assess chromatic aberration impact on cell performance.
▶ 03:12
4
Image lens irradiance spot using CCD camera
Capture spatial intensity profile of the concentrated light spot produced by the ADG Fresnel lens using a cooled CCD camera to evaluate focus quality and concentration uniformity.
▶ 04:52
5
Compare ADG lens performance against silicone baseline
Analyze measured efficiency and irradiance uniformity data to demonstrate improvements of the ADG design over conventional silicone-on-glass Fresnel lenses in reducing chromatic aberration.
