Measuring Frailty in HIV-infected Individuals. Identification of Frail Patients is the First Step to Amelioration and Reversal of Frailty
DOI: 10.3791/50537-v
What you'll learn
✓Identify frailty syndrome components in HIV-infected patients using standardized screening
✓Administer and interpret frailty assessment tests in clinical practice
✓Recognize physiological changes indicating reduced functional reserve in HIV populations
✓Develop intervention strategies to ameliorate frailty and promote functional recovery
Protocol
Frailty syndrome is commonly seen in the aged and reflects multi-system physiological change. However, with reduced functional reserve and resilience frailty is also known to be common in the HIV infected population. This study outlined an easily administered screening test to identify HIV patients with frailty. When significant components of frailty are identified, clinicians will be able to focus on amelioration of the problem and promote reversion to the pre-frail state.

Steps
1
Conduct initial patient assessment and history
Perform baseline evaluation of HIV-infected patient including demographic data, clinical history, and functional status. Document current medication regimen and comorbidities relevant to frailty assessment.

2
Administer frailty screening tests
Execute standardized frailty testing protocol to measure multi-system physiological changes and functional reserve. Assess key frailty components through validated clinical testing methods.
▶ 03:09
3
Interpret and document frailty test results
Analyze screening results to classify patient frailty status and identify specific physiological deficits. Document findings to inform clinical decision-making for intervention planning.
▶ 04:13
4
Develop frailty amelioration and reversal strategy
Design targeted clinical interventions based on identified frailty components to promote functional recovery and progression toward pre-frail state in HIV-infected patients.
