Recording Large-scale Neuronal Ensembles with Silicon Probes in the Anesthetized Rat
DOI: 10.3791/3282-v
What you'll learn
✓Prepare anesthetized rat for surgery
✓Implant silicon probes into brain
✓Record extracellular neural activity
✓Analyze multi-neuron ensemble data
Protocol
Biopharma Insights Extracellular recordings of neuronal activity using silicon probes in the anesthetized rat will be described. This technique allows information to be obtained across multiple brain areas from more than 100 neurons simultaneously. It provides information with single cell resolution about neuronal ensembles dynamics in multiple local circuits.

Steps
1
Prepare rat for surgery
Anesthetize the rat and position it in a stereotaxic frame; expose the skull for craniotomy.
▶ 01:45
2
Implant silicon probes
Lower the silicon probes into the brain targeting regions of interest for extracellular recordings.
▶ 02:53
3
Record large-scale neuronal ensembles
Acquire extracellular signals from multiple brain areas simultaneously with high temporal resolution.
▶ 04:27
4
Review conclusion and results
Summarize the representative data and discuss implications for studying neuronal ensemble dynamics.
