Heating Under Reflux

Steps

1
Understand reflux apparatus and principles

Learn that reflux is a heating technique used to accelerate chemical reactions. The setup uses a round-bottomed flask with a condenser (tube-within-tube design) where solvent vapors condense on cold inner walls and recycle back into the reaction mixture without loss.

2
Prepare reaction mixture in flask

Add reactants to a round-bottomed flask followed by a suitable solvent, mix quickly to dissolve the reactants, and add a boiling chip to prevent bumping during heating.

▶ 01:36
3
Assemble reflux apparatus and clamps

Securely clamp the reaction flask vertically, attach the condenser to the flask with a good fit and clamp it in position. Place a wire gauze supported by a ring directly underneath the reaction flask to distribute heat evenly.

▶ 01:57
4
Connect water cooling system

Attach tubing from the bottom port of the condenser to the water supply and direct the top port tubing toward the drain. Start the water flow before applying heat to ensure the outer jacket is filled and continuously cooled.

5
Heat reaction mixture under reflux

Apply heat using a Bunsen burner beneath the wire gauze to bring the reaction mixture to a boil. Reduce heat by moderating the gas flow to maintain steady boiling while solvent vapors condense on the inner condenser tube and recycle back.

6
Maintain reflux conditions during reaction

Continue heating under reflux as the reaction proceeds. The condenser must remain cold with continuously flowing water to prevent solvent loss and allow indefinite recycling of the boiling solvent vapors.

7
Cool apparatus and disassemble safely

Turn off the Bunsen burner to stop heating, and once the reaction mixture stops boiling, turn off the water flow. Wait several minutes or wear heat-protecting gloves before disassembling hot apparatus components to avoid burns.
