How to Use an Analytical Balance

Steps

1
Understand analytical balance capabilities

Learn that analytical balances measure with precision to four decimal places and have weight limits (e.g., 310 grams maximum). Understand that items like paperclips weigh about one gram, and overloading will cause damage.

2
Prepare workspace and level the balance

Place the balance on a steady surface like a marble counter or lab workbench away from doorways and air vents to minimize vibrations. Check that the balance is level by adjusting the feet until the air bubble is inside the black ring.

3
Weigh lightweight sample with weighing paper

Fold opposite corners of weighing paper to create creases, then place it on the balance pan. Close the side doors, press tare to zero the paper, then slowly add sodium bicarbonate using a lab scoop until reaching 1.5 grams, documenting the final reading.

4
Weigh heavier sample with weigh boat

Place a weigh boat on the balance pan for measuring heavier substances like powdered Tris buffer. Close the side doors, press tare, and carefully add powder until reaching the target of 12.19 grams (within ±0.02 grams tolerance), then document the measurement.

5
Clean and maintain the analytical balance

Turn off or unplug the balance and remove the weigh pan and components by lifting straight up. Use a soft bristle paintbrush to sweep away any powder remaining inside the weigh chamber and in the glass door grooves, then replace the drip ring and weigh pan.
