Setting up and taking down reflux glassware

Protocol

Steps

1
Attach tubing to reflux condenser

Remove threads from tubing, insert into condenser fittings, and screw on tightly. Use shorter tubing for the bottom inlet and longer tubing for the top outlet to reach the sink.

2
Connect condenser to round bottom flask

Clean the flask neck with tissue, insert the condenser into the quick-fit glass joint, and position it to sit comfortably without forcing.

3
Secure condenser with loose support clamp

Position a loose clamp around the condenser for safety without tightening it, allowing gravity to seat the glass joint properly while the round bottom flask provides the actual security.

4
Connect water tubing to sink and tap

Attach the top outlet tubing to the sink using a boss head clamp, then firmly attach the bottom inlet tubing to the water tap to prevent pressure-related disconnection.

▶ 02:07
5
Turn on water and check for leaks

Slowly turn on the water tap and fill the condenser carefully, observing the system for any leakages and ensuring adequate water flow rate through the condenser.

▶ 02:40
6
Heat the reflux and monitor condensation

Set the hot plate to approximately 100°C for ethanol and note the time when solvent vapor begins condensing on the flask wall. Allow reflux to proceed for the required duration.

▶ 03:03
7
Cool the system and turn off heat

Turn off the heat and lower the lab jack to remove the system from the heat source. Keep stirring and water flowing through the condenser as the apparatus cools to room temperature.

▶ 03:26
8
Disassemble and drain the condenser

Remove the condenser from the flask and drain all water from it into the sink by turning off the tap water, draining the top tubing, and inverting the condenser to empty the bottom outlet completely.
