Steps
1
Prepare and assemble distillation apparatus
Set up the fractional distillation equipment including the jack-supported heating mantle, retort stands, fractionating column with glass beads, still head, condenser with water tubing, and receiving flask. Ensure all components are properly clamped and secured with elastic bands or clamps.

2
Verify apparatus alignment and water flow
Check that the column is vertical, the condenser is centered, and water outlet tubes point upward to ensure the condenser fills completely with cooling water. Confirm water inlet connects to the condenser bottom and outlet to the drain.
▶ 02:05
3
Position thermometer and prepare for heating
Adjust the thermometer so it sits midway between the still head and condenser inlet. Add a boiling chip to the flask to prevent bumping and turn on the cooling water supply.
▶ 02:55
4
Heat mixture and monitor vapor separation
Apply heat to vaporize the ethanol-water mixture. The lower boiling point component (ethanol at 78°C) will rise through the column first, condense on glass beads, and progressively separate as vapor continues through multiple mini-distillations within the packed column.
▶ 03:30
5
Collect first fraction and switch receiving flasks
Once the thermometer reads above 78°C, indicating water is entering the vapor stream, quickly remove the ethanol-filled receiving flask and replace it with a new one to collect the water fraction. Secure the new flask with an elastic band.
▶ 04:50
6
Complete distillation and optimize conditions
Continue the fractional distillation while maintaining a balanced heating rate that allows adequate time for equilibration on the glass beads, ensuring good component separation without sacrificing throughput. Monitor temperature throughout the process.
▶ 05:30
7
Disassemble apparatus in reverse order
Once distillation is complete, carefully disassemble all components in the reverse order of assembly, removing receiving flasks, condenser, column, still head, and heating mantle from the apparatus.
